Written On The Wall At Change’s Hermitage
- Tu Fu - translated by Kenneth Rexroth:

It is Spring in the mountains.
I come alone seeking you.
The sound of chopping wood echoes
Between the silent peaks.
The streams are still icy.
There is snow on the trail.
At sunset I reach your grove
In the stony mountain pass.
You want nothing, although at night
You can see the aura of gold
And silver ore all around you.
You have learned to be gentle
As the mountain deer you have tamed.
The way back forgotten, hidden
Away, I become like you,
An empty boat, floating, adrift.

Huston Smith: “Well they do, in two ways, Australian aborigines.
One is that they distinguish between our everyday experience and
what they call the dreaming. The dreaming is another level of experience,
in which they participate in the life of their ancestors, and indeed
the creation of the world, in I suppose we might call it a trance-like
state, but that doesn’t quite do it, because even in the midst of their
ordinary life, half of their mind, you might say, is still on or in this
dreaming state.?
